When I think about Oumy Beauty Studio, I think back to my grandmother, Mame Baleyera. She was the driving force behind my coming to America for a better life. I am the woman I am today because she raised me with abundant wisdom, love, kindness, and pride - values that are also core to Oumy.
Although my story began in Senegal, West Africa, braiding hair has allowed me to share my culture with the people of Winston-Salem for 20+ years. Braiding is an art form with certain types of braids having historical roots - going back to when braids communicated social status, religious and/or tribal loyalties, or rites of passage. Today, braids provide a wide range of hairstyling options while celebrating the versatility of textured hair. Getting one’s hair braided can also an empowering way to embrace their natural beauty. I’m proud Oumy allows me to help change lives one braid at a time.
